Séneca sostuvo que una vida lograda es aquella que se asienta sobre la razón iluminada por la verdad; que es, indefectiblemente, una vida tranquila, estable, libre, pacífica y magnánima. Mantuvo que los males sólo lo son para la persona que no puede sobrellevarlos bien, y que el hombre bueno se curte sufriendo lo que para otros sería un mal, se entrena venciendo las adversidades y se perfecciona subyugándolas, preparando su espíritu en recio combate con ellas. Un hombre así sabe ofrecerse al destino. Las heridas de un alma, y más aún las que un alma brinda a ser nuevamente desgarradas, son la prueba de su valor.
