Rodolphe Töpffer (1799-1846) fue un pintor ginebrino qeu alcanzó gran popularidad con la publicación de sus histoires o romans en estampes -tal como él las definió- dedicadas principalmente a sus alumnos pero que tuvieron enorme éxito también entre el público adulto. Al engarzar literatura e imagen creó un género artístico nuevo por lo que se le considera el inventor del cómic. Las historias reunidas en Monsieur Crépin y Monsieur Pencil, responden a los temas habituales de Töpffer: la crítica a las pretencisones científicas de muchos charlatanes, las costumbres sociales, el poder, el ejército o la burocracia, todo tenido de su particular ironía y gran sentido del humor.
