En aquest assaig, persuasiu i provocador alhora, Kuhn parteix del pressupòsit que la ciència té un passat que no podem negligir. Ara bé, allò que hem d'estudiar amb cura no és tan sols la teoria, sinó també la pràctica real dels científics; per això Kuhn parla sobretot dels practitioners, dels "practicants" d'una ciència.
El resultat a què arriba l'historiador que utilitza aquests conceptes és que, al llarg dels segles, la ciència ha estat lligada a pràctiques intel·lectuals i socials molt diverses -¿que potser parlen de la mateixa realitat la mecànica newtoniana i les ciències ambientals? Aquesta diversitat sovint és acumulativa, però no sempre. De vegades sorgeixen enfrontaments irreconciliables entre científics. Llavors l'única manera de resoldre's és una revolució, un canvi traumàtic en les institucions i les maneres de fer i pensar dels científics implicats.
