Abandonades a la seva sort i amb un munt de deutes, mare i filla no tindran més remei que vendre-s'ho tot i marxar al camp a viure a casa dels oncles, un món ple de records d'infantesa però d'allò més avorrit.Un dia, però, quan una biblioteca ambulant passa per casa dels oncles, la Tamara descobreix un llibre misteriós enquadernat en cuir, rematat en or i tancat amb un cadenat, que posarà el seu món de cap per avall.
