Durant anys fou el suport del seu germà Joan I i quan aquest morí sense hereu ell el succeí havent de fer front a tota una colla de problemes de difícil solució: la implicació del Casal de Barcelona en el Cisma d'Occident, les bandositats dins d'Aragó i València, el control de Sardenya... La pèrdua prematura del seu fill, Martí el Jove, significà que amb la mort de Martí I s'extingí la dinastia del Casal de Barcelona, iniciada per Guifré el Pelós més de cinc-cents anys abans.
