Un meteorito se dirige hacia la tierra y muchos presagian el fin del mundo. Tintín acude al observatorio astronómico donde conoce al profesor Calys. Por suerte los presagios no se cumplen y solo llega a la tierra un fragmento del meteorito, que cae en el océano Ártico. Al advertir la presencia de un elemento desconocido, el profesor Calys organiza una expedición en el navío Aurora, de la que forman parte Tintín y el capitán Haddock. La estrella misteriosa será en primer álbum diseñado ya directamente a color y fue publicado en el año 1942.
