L'home que ha rebut la carta demana ajut a David Gurney, un policia que després de vint-i-cinc anys de servei s'ha retirat al nord de l'Estat de Nova York. Tots dos intentaran trobar el remitent amb urgència i es veuran embolicats en un joc sinistre, perquè el que en un principi semblava poc més que un xantatge s'acaba convertint en un cas d'assassinat que, a més, guarda relació amb altres d'ocorreguts en el passat. Gurney haurà de descobrir si el criminal és capaç de llegir la ment de les seves víctimes i de quina manera. Només així podrà traçar un pla per atrapar el criminal.
