Junto a Catherine Johnson, Grandin examina el autismo y lo interpreta como una suerte de lugar intermedio en el camino que separa a los animales de los humanos, lo cual sitúa a los autistas en la posición perfecta para traducir el «habla animal». Las autoras exploran el dolor, el miedo, la agresión, el amor, la amistad, la comunicación, el aprendizaje e incluso el genio de los animales.
