Ambientada en la Argentina sometida a la dictadura del general Jorge Videla (1976-1981), esta novela narra la vida de una pareja formada por un hombre y una mujer sindicalistas, pacifistas y firmemente demócratas, que terminan siendo víctimas, a pesar de no haber empuñado un arma en toda su vida, de lo que aquel régimen dictatorial y represivo denominó eufemísticamente «guerra contra el terrorismo». Aunque la novela se inspira indudablemente en hechos reales acaecidos durante la segunda mitad de la década de 1970 en Argentina, ninguno de los nombres de sus protagonistas es verdadero.
