Escrita en un estil elegant i planer, no ha deixat de provocar, des de la seva publicació (1961), discussions i comentaris arreu del món. S'ha convertit en llibre de referència de tot curs de filosofia del dret i alhora ha estat aplaudit i debatut més enllà dels cercles acadèmics. Cinquanta anys després d'haver vist la llum en anglès, en presentem per primera vegada una traducció catalana, feta a partir de la segona edició original, que inclou un Postscript amb les respostes de Hart a les principals crítiques que l'obra va rebre fins a la seva mort, l'any 1992.
