Michel Marini, fotògraf aficionat, lector compulsiu i gran jugador de futbolí, tenia dotze anys el 1959, quan freqüentava el cafè Balto de París. Eren els temps del rock and roll, de Jean-Paul Sartre i de la guerra d'Algèria. En una sala annexa d'aquest cafè, en Michel coneix Igor, Leonid, Sasha, Imré i la resta d'integrants del Club dels optimistes incorregibles. Per salvar la pell, tots han hagut de creuar el teló d'acer. Tots han deixat enrere l'amor i les seves famílies. Per sobreviure, tots s'han vist abocats a trair els seus ideals. La trobada amb els membres del club canvia l'existència d'en Michel i l'ajuda a oblidar les tensions familiars i els embolics sentimentals. Es converteix en el benjamí del grup i a poc a poc fa el seu particular aprenentatge del món amb els seus clarobscurs, alhora que descobreix el terrible secret que uneix aquests homes.
