Pieza revolucionaria dentro de la estética del surrealismo, se caracteriza por el fuerte sentido erótico, incluso pornográfico, que contienen sus páginas. También por su implacable crítica social, política, circunstancial; por su exasperado canto a la libertad y por la enunciación de los valores del nuevo hombre. El discurso en favor de la mujer es uno de los aspectos más sobresalientes y sorprendentes del libro.
André Thirion (1907-2011) es uno de los grandes surrealistas parisinos, jamás traducido al castellano, militó en el Partido Comunista y participó activamente en el Movimiento.
