Patrice Chéreau revolucionó el mundo de la escena operística con el montaje que hizo en 1976, por encargo de Pierre Boulez, de El anillo de los nibelungos, una puesta en escena de gran envergadura para un director de escena tan joven. Chéreau se propuso crear un hito en la historia de la ópera y lo consiguió. Cinco años más tarde, Boulez le propuso la representación completa, por primera vez, de Lulu, la obra de Alan Berg, que murió sin acabarla: Suponiendo que la ópera sea teatro es el recuento de esa experiencia.
