Ross Macdonald (Los Gatos, CA, 1915 - Santa Bárbara, CA, 1983) es el pseudónimo del novelista Kenneth Millar, uno de los autores clave de la literatura negra norteamericana. Doctor en Literatura por la Universidad de Michigan, se enroló como oficial de transmisiones en la Marina al final de la Segunda Guerra Mundial y contrajo matrimonio con la también escritora Margaret Millar. Inició su carrera literaria durante la primera mitad de los años cuarenta en revistas de bajo presupuesto, valiéndose de la influencia de autores como Dashiell Hammet y Raymond Chandler, de quienes ha sido considerado el más brillante heredero. Su primera novela, The dark tunnel (1944), marcó el inicio de una prolífica carrera que le coronó como uno de los mayores creadores de literatura policíaca del siglo XX.
