El 28 de julio de 1841 el hallazgo en el río Hudson del cuerpo sin vida, con visibles señales de violencia, de Mary Rogers, una joven conocida en todo Nueva York como «la bella cigarrera», dio inicio a uno de los más famosos «crímenes del siglo». Edgar Allan Poe tuvo la idea de reconstruirlo en El misterio de Marie Rogêt (incluido en un apéndice a esta edición), un relato paralelo ambientado en París y protagonizado por el detective Auguste C. Dupin. Tenía asimismo la ambición de resolver el misterio y señalar al culpable, pero la realidad, con inesperadas revelaciones, se le adelantó.
