Robert Walser fue introducido por su hermano, el pintor Karl Walser, en el mundo del arte de Berlín,
aunque también escribió sobre pintura después de su etapa berlinesa y visitó exposiciones en Berna y en Zúrich. Así surgieron prosas y poemas dispersos que conforman una especie de historia personal del arte: en unas ocasiones Walser se enfrenta a un cuadro de manera imaginativamente narrativa, pero en otras responde con un ensayo estricto o con una glosa más lúdica. Walser nunca se muestra académico, pues él considera que el arte es el reino incuestionable de la libertad.
Los cuadros de Tiziano, Rembrandt, Van Gogh, Renoir y Cézanne, entre otros, a los que se refieren los textos de Walser están reproducidos en color en esta edición.
