La desolació inicial aviat canviarà amb el contacte amb una gent disposada a preservar la petita parcel·la de llibertat que s'han construït. Dalmau s'integrarà en una història en què un deute del passat està a punt de remoure uns foscos fets que semblaven enterrats. Un misteriós personatge, propietari de la major part de l'illa, mantingut en l'anonimat i conegut com l'holandès, té la clau per salvar un territori i unes vides, però ningú no sap qui és.
