Al camp d'extermini d'Auschwitz les condicions de vida són infrahumanes i els abusos, els càstigs o la mort són companys habituals dels reclusos com en Daniel, un luthier jueu de Cracòvia que sobreviu a aquest infern treballant de fuster. El comandant del camp, Sauckel, afeccionat a la música clàssica, descobreix l'autèntic ofici d'en Daniel i decideix posar-lo a prova: li haurà de construir un violí que tingui un so perfecte.
