Tras la muerte de Locke, su heredero lord King encontró entre loos papeles del filósofo un escrito sin título ni fecha. Se trataba de un compendio del Ensayo sobre el Entendimiento Humano, redactado por el propio Locke: justamente el epítome que Jean Le Clerc tradujera al francés y piblicara en su Bibliothèque universelle en 1688, antes de que el Ensayo fuese dado al mundo. La traducción que aquí se ofrece, primera de este escrito en castellano, se basa en el orginal inglés -todavía no recogido en la edición canónica de las obras de Locke- editado por el albacea del gran pensador.
