La trama de Coriolano gira alrededor de un militar romano, Gayo Marcio, acérrimo partidario del patriciado y enemigo de la plebe. Honrado por su superior debido a sus victorias militares, se le concede un tercer nombre, Coriolano. En vista de su gloriosa carrera presenta su candidatura a cónsul pero su ideología antiplebeya y antidemocrática es aprovechada por sus enemigos para acusarle de traidor y es condenado al destierro. A partir de aquí, inicia una marcha contra Roma.
