Estudià al grup escolar Sant Ramon de Penyafort fins els catorze anys, i començà a treballar en diveros oficis. Sempre ha viscut en el que avui dia anomenem Zona Franca, cosa que li ha permès estar prop dels problemes dels immigrants dels quals ha fet matèria literària.
