El conflicte irresoluble plantejat a l'obra que ens ocupa és un episodi del cicle mític de la família real de Tebes. Èdip, el rei, porta a les espatlles la maledicció de matar el seu pare i casar-se amb la seva pròpia mare, tot com a conseqüència de la irresponsabilitat del seu pare, Laios, que el va engendrar contra la voluntat dels déus. Descoberta la infàmia, Èdip és decantat pels seus fills que es disputen el poder i acorden assumir-lo alternativament. L'incompliment del pacte per part d'0Etèocles, el primer a ser rei, té conseqüències terribles. Les fenícies posa sobre la taula una colla de temes ben actuals que el lector anirà descobrint seguint el fil del text, molt més pels raonaments intercanviats entre els personatges que no pas per l'acció mateixa.
