Entre febrero y junio de 1874, los carlistas, como hicieran en 1835 bajo el mando de Zumalacarregui, asediaron Bilbao. Durante esos meses, los restos de los obuses, los cánticos militares y las noticias del frente fueron motivo de inocente juego para un jovencísimo Unamuno. Años más tarde, dedicaría más de una década a tejer sus recuerdos, retales de artículos, fragmentos de libros y los testimonios orales recogidos durante su vida en su obra más singular. Zarandeada durante décadas por historiadores con sed de política, es hoy rescatada con un soberbio prólogo de Miguel Sánchez-Ostiz y una cuidada edición que incluye grabados e ilustraciones de la época.
