Pero los acontecimientos del 11 de septiembre de 2001 pusieron a prueba la fibra de la ciudad como nunca había pasado en sus 400 años de historia. La destrucción del World Trade Center y sus consecuencias acapararon la atención del mundo. La ciudad no pudo rendir mejor tributo a las vidas sacrificadas que con su respuesta, conmemorando la tragedia mientras seguía adelante con confianza y determinación.
