Les seves obres giren al voltant de dos eixos: el Madrid de la Guerra civil i de la postguerra i les literatures eslaves, amb una dedicació especial a la russa. S'han valorat sobretot els seus contes, però també ha conreat la novel·la curta, l'assaig i l'anècdota sàvia.
