Dietrich Bonhoeffer, eminent professor de teologia a la Universitat de Berlín i professor convidat a diferents universitats dels Estats Units, va ser detingut per la Gestapo el 5 d'abril de 1943. Ja no va sortir més de la presó. L'abril de 1945 va ser executat en un camp d'extermini nazi per haver-se oposat a l'església oficial propugnada pel nazisme (els Deutsche Christen). Durant aquest temps d'empresonament, va poder escriure els textos de reflexió i les cartes que formen el llibre. Textos que, per la seva profunditat ètica i el seu valor moral, han esdevingut fonamentals en el pensament europeu del segle XX.
