El 1938, un brigadista nord-americà desapareix durant la batalla de l'Ebre, prop de la Fatarella. Setanta anys després, la Barbara Stein, la seva néta, hi viatja per descobrir les circumstàncies de la seva mort. El seu propòsit s'estronca a causa d'un misteriós assassinat en què es veu involucrada, i que activa records traumàtics de la República --com la mort de 34 camperols per milícies anarquistes--, la guerra civil i la repressió franquista.
