Un temps després, l'ira d'un terratinent local amenaça la seva família, i Feliu marxa primer cap a la Barcelona anarquista i més endavant cap al Madrid de la cort, on la filla d'un professor de música li ofereix les primeres lliçons de l'art de l'amor. Allà mateix, Feliu coneix l'excèntric i encantador prodigi del piano Justo Al-Cerraz, amb qui mantindrà una amistat i una rivalitat que durarà tota la vida.
