Si bé en el moment de la seva aparició, Estudi en escarlata no va aconseguir un ressò esclatant, va atraure tot seguit l?atenció dels editors nord-americans.
Estudi en escarlata conté dos relats diferenciats. En el primer, després de presentar-nos les figures de Sherlock Holmes i el seu inseparable doctor watson, Conan Doyle planteja el cas de l?assassinat d?Enock J. Drebber, i les investigacions que porta aterme Sherlock Holmes. A la segona part, Doyle ens explica els antecedents del cas resolt per Holmes.
