En Jan mor de manera inesperada i totes les persones que han tingut relació amb ell, amics, esposa, família, assisteixen al funeral. Un d'ells, potser l'amic amb qui ha mantingut una relació més estreta, es deixa endur en el pensament pels records del difunt. Retrat intimista d'una llarga amistat entre en Jan i el personatge narrador, la novel·la que teniu a les mans mostra l'evolució dels seus sentiments i il·lusions, entusiasmes i fòbies. El narrador, distant, escèptic i introvertit, posa el contrapunt al caràcter obert, idealista i ingenu d'en Jan. Entre ells dos emergeix la figura de la Laura, la dona d'en Jan. Situada entre Barcelona i Tòquio, Yume "somni en japonès" és la història d'un home destruït pels somnis narrada per un amic que és al·lèrgic a qualsevol forma de fantasia.
