En un barrio donde se exageran los vicios ajenos y se reconoce el bien sólo cuando no hay más remedio, nace Izzat, niño mimado por una madre viuda de cincuenta años admirada en su barrio por su belleza y su fortuna. Cuando empieza la escuela, Izzat descubre que existen otras personas: se hace amigo de Hamdún y se enamora a primera vista de Badriyya. El tiempo pasa e Izzat cada vez se deja influir más por su amigo y se obsesiona más con la Badriyya, quien ya no es una niña. El joven desea casarse con ella pero pronto Hamdún y Badriyya se fugan juntos, dejando a Izzat solo con su madre.
