La papallona, publicada el 1882, és la primera novel?la llarga de Narcís Oller. En aquesta obra, Oller comença a realitzar el seu propòsit principal: descriure literàriament la realitat de la societat catalana del seu temps. La papallona, expressió fidel de la menestralia de Barcelona, va marcar l?inici del naturalisme a Catalunya i va donar a Narcís Oller fama europea. L?any 1885 la novel?la va ser traduïda al francès i va ser prologada per Émile Zola.Narcís Oller (Valls, 1846 ? Barcelona, 1930) és el fundador de la novel?la catalana moderna. Les seves grans obres d?aquest gènere són: La papallona, Vilaniu, La febre d?or, L?escanyapobres i Pilar Prim, la majoria traduïdes a diverses llengües. És autor de les novel·les breus Isabel de Galceran, La bogeria, La bufetada i Lo transplantat. Dins la seva producció trobem també nombrosos contes.
