Julio Mariscal Montes nació en Arcos de la Frontera (Cádiz) en 1922 y murió a los cincuenta y cinco años en Jerez de la Frontera. Apenas salió de su pueblo y nunca traspasó los límites de Andalucía. Con otros poetas fundó la revista Alcaraván y más tarde la revista Platero. Su poesía está recogida en los libros Corral de muertos, Pasan hombres oscuros, Poemas de ausencia, Quinta palabra, Tierra de secano, Tierra, último día, Poemas a Soledad, Trébol de cuatro hojas y Aún es hoy. Perteneciente por edad a la Generación del 50, fue Julio Mariscal un poeta solitario y apartado, ajeno a las cucañas y servidumbres del mundo literario. Su poesía, delicada y desgarrada a la vez, nunca ha obtenido por parte de la crítica la atención que se merece.
