El romance es un poema de carácter narrativo que cuenta una historia, verídica o de ficción, que es retenida en la memoria y se difunde oralmente, dando lugar a múltiples versiones distintas de un mismo romance. Esta edición recoge una selección tanto de los llamados romances viejos, aquellos romances tradicionales anónimos, de origen medieval, documentados en el siglo XVI, como de aquellos otros romances de autor que van del siglo XVI al XX, y entre cuyos representantes encontramos a Góngora, Lope, Quevedo, Bécquer, Antonio Machado, García Lorca o Miguel Hernández. El Romancero recorre la historia de la literatura española desde la Edad Media hasta la actualidad, y ocupa por su versatilidad y constancia un lugar único en nuestras letras.
