La alucinatoria vida de Athanasius Pernath transcurre en el gueto judío de Praga durante la dominación del imperio austrohúngaro. Tras sucumbir al extraño influjo de un sombrero encontrado en una catedral, el protagonista intenta abrirse paso entre sórdidos crímenes y arcanas apariciones, al tiempo que comienza a entrever el carácter místico de la realidad y de su propio destino. Personajes misteriosos y antiguas leyendas medievales se entretejen en un trasfondo onírico y perturbador.
